Brainspotting (BSP) is a relatively new trauma therapy developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003. It’s a body–brain based approach that uses eye position to help clients access, process, and release unprocessed trauma stored in the nervous system.
While Brainspotting has been widely practiced by therapists worldwide, research into its effectiveness is still growing. Over the past two years, several new studies have emerged that shine more light on how BSP works and its potential for trauma healing.
✨ Brainspotting Reduces PTSD, Anxiety & Depression
A 2024 study compared five weeks of Brainspotting to traditional therapies such as CBT and psychodynamic approaches. Both groups improved in symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression—but the Brainspotting group continued to show improvement even at follow-up, suggesting longer-lasting benefits.📖 International Journal of Mental Health and Rehabilitation, 2024
🧠 Brainspotting Changes the Brain
In early 2025, a unique neuroimaging single-case study followed a survivor of sexual violence who completed 30 online BSP sessions. Results showed not only a reduction in PTSD symptoms, but also measurable changes in brain metabolism in trauma-related regions, captured through PET scans.📖 ResearchGate, 2025
💻 Online Brainspotting Works Too
One of the most exciting findings comes from research into online BSP. A 2025 study found that even when delivered virtually, Brainspotting was effective in reducing PTSD symptoms—making trauma-informed care more accessible to people who may not have in-person options.📖 International Journal of Mental Health and Rehabilitation, 2025
🌸 What This Means for Trauma Healing
While more large-scale studies are still needed, the emerging research is promising:
Brainspotting may provide sustained relief from trauma symptoms.
It has measurable effects not just emotionally, but also neurologically.
Online delivery opens doors to healing for people everywhere.
For many clients, Brainspotting feels gentler than traditional talk therapy, allowing the body to lead the way in processing trauma that words alone can’t reach.
